Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, better known as TMJ, is a condition of the joint in the jaw in which the muscles and joints become sore and cause pain and limited motion. TMJ can be caused by a variety of reasons, including arthritis, family history and trauma to the jaw. Certain people who clench their jaws or grind their teeth can experience TMJ. What is TMJ and How Can It Be Treated?
TMJ disorder can cause dislocation or inflammation of surrounding bones, muscles, ligaments and tissues.
Look for the signs of TMJ:
- Aching in the face or around the ears
- Aching of the TMJ
- Ear pain
- Frequent headaches
- Jaw joint locking up
- Painful chewing
- Soreness of the jaw
- Sounds like popping in the jaw
A dentist may recommend a TMJ patient reduce the amount of pressure and work on the affected jaw joint.
